Here are a few software programs that I find useful for browsing the web and eliminating advertising:

Proxomitron
This is the software program I use to kill all banner ads and pop-up windows. It is actually a programmable web filter that allows you to replace or delete any type of ad or pop up on a web page. Like most ad killers it requires you to change your browser settings to set it up but it is fully configurable and free. This is windows only.

Web Washer
This is a web filter and ad killer program for Mac, Linux and Windows. It is free for personal use. The download page is here.

Ad-Aware
This is a must-have product to search your computer for trojan horses and what is called "Spy Ware". Spyware is software that is installed onto your machine without your knowledge and tells a company things about what you are doing on the internet. I was surprised to find a number of programs on my hard drive that I had not installed that were taking up processing resources (they auto-load when you turn your computer on). Unfortunately for Mac users, this is windows only.
